How to make your Step Up application stand out

News Step Up

The Travel Media Awards Step Up internship scheme is offering FIVE successful candidates the chance to undertake invaluable experience with 10 leading travel media companies including: APL Media, easyJet holidays, FINN Partners, Ink Global, Intrepid Travel, Kuoni, Metro, The Sun, TTG Media and Virgin Atlantic. Previous winners, Kira Richards and Sasha Wiltshire, share their five top tips for what to include in a successful entry.

  • Showcase why you’re the best candidate: Consider why you want to apply and how the internship would best support your developing career. While it may seem obvious, this makes it clear that you have evaluated the benefits of participating in the programme.
  • Think about how your skills apply: Have you acquired previous jobs or experiences that will lend themselves to Step Up? Candidates could also outline what areas interns want to get upskilled in.
  • Take your time and make sure you proofread your entry: Applications can be submitted until 11.59pm on Friday 31 January 2025. Standout candidates prove their interest in the travel media industry and take the time to proofread their statements for spelling and grammar errors.
  • Get creative: When answering the questions consider how you can highlight the creativity you’ll bring to the role, from pitching story ideas to writing seamless copy. Demonstrating strong writing ability is vital, so use this opportunity to craft an atmospheric and exciting response about what travel means to you. Perhaps use an anecdote or illustrative language.
  • Be professional: The Step Up internship is an employment opportunity and, while candidates are encouraged to share a sense of their personalities in their applications, it’s best to remain professional. Avoid slang or an overly casual tone in the application and adopt the same attitude used for any work-related submission.

Travel Media Awards Step Up is an internship programme designed to drive diversity and inclusion in travel media for young people, by giving young people from underrepresented backgrounds the opportunity to gain experience and mentorship in journalism, publishing and public relations. Step Up partners will be looking to work with the five winners next summer — each undertaking a four-week placement with two partner companies.
